The bus epitomizes the call of adventure.
In 1951, the Iowa Mountaineers bus was first introduced for a cross-country outing as 18 men and women loaded up on the ultimate road trip from Iowa to Alaska. This trip documented the first American group to drive up the Alaska Highway and to hold a mountaineering camp in Mt. McKinley National Park (now Denali National Park). Four peaks were ascended and named for first ascents in the Eastern Alaska Range. Driving the Alaska Highway required extreme caution, as it was all gravel with huge potholes. Wildlife was seen as abundantly as on an African Safari and only one other vehicle was seen on this trip.
